Book Descriptive Abbreviations

 

Mint / New

 

Mint Conditions is normally used when the book is As New - Basically the Condition Sold when it was published. To be used only when the book is in the same immaculate condition to which it was published. There can be no defects, no missing pages, no library stamps, etc., and the dust jacket (if it was issued with one) must be perfect, without any tears.

 

Fine

 

Approaches the condition of New, but without being crisp. For the use of the term Fine, there must also be no defects, etc., and if the jacket has a small tear, or other defect, or looks worn, this should be noted.


 

Very Good

 

Very Good is when all pages are present, the book as been read but there are no major faults, but minor one should be noted. There is a fine line between Very Good and Fine. Any defects must be noted.

 

Good

 

Good generally describes the book as being read, the spine and dust jacket may have creasing, pages are intact, not tight or crisp, page may have slight creasing, though collectable copies are sought after in Good to Very Good Condition. You will also find with Good Condition books that major faults will be noted, such as condition of binding, missing pages, tears, etc. Describes the condition of an average used worn book that is complete.

 

Fair

 

Describes the average used worn book that has complete text pages (including those with maps or plates) but may lack endpapers, half-title, etc. (which must be noted). Binding, jacket (if any), etc., may also be worn. Any defects must be noted.
 

Ex. Lib.

 

Ex. Library Copy  generally describes the book as being previously owned by a library, with internal/ external stamps and markings. Usually the book is with or without a Dust Jacket and usually all pages are present, and there are no major faults unless noted. Usually makes a good desk copy.

 

Note: A book size of, for example 160x237mm = approx. 6 1/4" x 9 3/8" (25.4mm = 1 inch)
